Surkid

Growing up in East German prefabs while listening to everything the 90s rave scene spilled out, Axel Sandig has come a long way in his musical socialization. Yet, his predilection for rather simple melodies might not be the only remnant of that time. Having been musically trained to play pop pieces on a plastic piano with little red lights attached to every key, things could have turned out differently. By chance his musical path tock a well-disposed turn when a good friend introduced him to Radiohead’s ‘Kid A’ which entirely changed the way he was perceiving music until then.

Low internet bandwidths wouldn’t prevent Axel from exploring everything his brain subconsciously labeled “organic electronica” but since he never really cared about genres those ever-growing folders on his hard disk of pre-streaming times were simply named after colors with blue being the largest.

After years of digging for unpolished gems he felt confident enough to share his sound discoveries on German radio station ByteFM with a monthly show dedicated to ambient, soundtrack, electronica and a touch of folk. In return, curating numerous playlists seemed to have strengthened the wish for his own musical expression and laid the foundation of what would eventually become Surkid.
